How to tell "what time is it?"
In this lesson we will learn how to tell time in Japanese.1 O'Clock = いちじ (ichi-ji)
2 O'Clock = にじ (ni-ji)
3 O'Clock = さんじ (san-ji)
4 O'Clock = よじ (yo-ji) *not よんじ (yon-ji)
5 O'Clock = ごじ (go-ji)
6 O'Clock = ろくじ (roku-ji)
7 O'Clock = しちじ (shichi-ji) *not ななじ (nana-ji)
8 O'Clock = はちじ (hachi-ji)
9 O'Clock = くじ (ku-ji) *not きゅうじ (kyuu-ji)
10 O'Clock = じゅうじ (juu-ji)
11 O'Clock = じゅういちじ (juuichi-ji)
12 O'Clock = じゅうにじ (juuni-ji)
Kanji
時 [じ, とき] = time, hour
Kunyomi: とき、 -どきOnyomi: ジ
Example: 一時 [いちじ] = 1 O'Clock
分 [ふん, (ぶん), (ぷん)] = minute (unit of time)
Kunyomi: わ.ける、 わ.け、 わ.かれる、 わ.かる、 わ.かつOnyomi: ブン、 フン、 ブ
Example: 三十分 [さんじゅっぷん] = 30 minutes
間 [かん] = (time) period, interval, space
Kunyomi: あいだ、 ま、 あいOnyomi: カン、 ケン
Example: 三時間 [さんじかん] = 3 hours
半 [はん] = half (half-past)
Kunyomi: なか.ばOnyomi: ハン
Example: 一時半 [いちじはん] = 1:30
Time Period
1 hour = 一時間 [いちじかん]2 hours = 二時間 [にじかん]
3 hours = 三時間 [さんじかん]
4 hours = 四時間 [よじかん] *not よんじかん/しじかん (yon-jikan/shi-jikan)
5 hours = 五時間 [ごじかん]
6 hours = 六時間 [ろくじかん]
7 hours = 七時間 [ななじかん / しちじかん]
8 hours = 八時間 [はちじかん]
9 hours = 九時間 [くじかん] *not きゅうじかん (kyuu-jikan)
10 hours = 十時間 [じゅうじかん]
11 hours = 十一時間 [じゅういちじかん]
12 hours = 十時間 [じゅうにじかん]
How to tell fraction of hour or time period:
2:30 = 二時半 [にじはん or にじさんじゅっぷん]3:15 = 三時十五分 [さんじじゅうごふん]
1 hour 30 minutes = 一時間半 [いちじかんはん or いちじかんさんじゅっぷん] (ichi-jikan han / ichi-jikan sanjuppun)
two and half hour or 2 hours 30 minutes= 二時間半 [にじかんはん or にじかんさんじゅっぷん] (ni-jikan han / ni-jikan sanjuppun)
Other time related words:
なん / なに [何] = whatいま [今] = now
あさ [朝] = morning
ごぜん [午前] = AM (morning hour/s)
ごご [午後] = PM (afternoon hour/s
よる [夜] = night
Let's make some sentences
わたしは朝六時におきました。 = I woke up at six in the morningわたしは二時間べんきょうしました。= I studied two hours.
今何時ですか? = What time is it?
今午前十時です。 = Now morning 10 O'clock.
何時にがっこうへいきますか? = What time (you) will go to school?
午後二時半にがっこうへいきます。= (I) will go to school at 2:30pm
えきからがっこうまで十五分間あるきます。= (I) will walk 15 minutes from station to school.
